Cape Verde islands

Cape Verde has 8 lovely islands, looks like a horseshoe.

The 8 islands:

Boa Vista
Fogo
Maio
Sal
San Antao
San Vicente
Santiago
Sao Nicolau

Maio

MAIO beíongs to the leeward group and is located south of the isíand of BOAVISTA and about 25 km east of SANTIAGO. It has a surface area of 268 km2, the longest point, in a north-south direction being 24 km and the widest point, in an east-west direction is 16 km. The island is on the whole fairly flat, the highest point, in the middle, is Monte Penoso, with an altitude of 436 m. The valleys are arid and dry and not very deep. The climate is very dry and the land is essentially calcium based s rock. The island does in fact have the biggest forest park in Cape Verde. The Northern region has been well eroded by the rough seas and the strong Northeast winds. Along the coast there are numerous and very beautiful beaches of fine golden sand.

Sal

Sal is the liveliest and most touristy of the Cape Verde Islands, the town of Santa Maria being the centre of the action.Crystal clear waters lap long stretches of white sandy beach, drawing water sports enthusiasts and holidaymakers who make the most of the rapidly developing hotels and resorts.Nearer the international airport is the town of Espargos. The island's main port, Palmeira, is a working fishing harbour and import station, but is currently improving its tourist infrastructure in line with the rest of the island.

Boa Vista

Boa Vista is quite literally covered in sand and many buildings have been completely absorbed leaving an endless blanket of sand. The island is 620km2 of size. A great example of this is on Praia da Chaves, an old ceramic factory covered in sand is still intact with machines in situ!Sahara like dunes in the interior of the island with sprouting date palms are an impressive sight and well worth a visit.Boa Vista is the easternmost island of Cape Verde. The island is known for marine turtles and traditional music,as well as its ultramarathon and its sand dunes and beaches.

Fogo

Fogo is a stratovolcano capped by the Cha caldera. The caldera is about 5 miles (8 km) in diameter. The east half of the caldera is defined by the Bordeira scarp. The caldera is open on the east and directs lava flows in that direction.Fogo has erupted ten times between 1500 and 1995. Most eruptions are from flank vents and include moderate explosions. Most eruptions also produce lava flows. Most eruptions cause damage but only the 1847 caused fatalities.Fogo meaning fire in Portuguese is a volcanic island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde.Fogo stands out the most from the group, rising to almost 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above sea level at Mount Fogo.A very violent eruption took place in 1680. Mount Fogo was visible over hundreds of kilometres and lasted for a couple of years. It was then that the island earned its name.
